New Technology Can Be Operated By Thought - by Mark | November 11, 2007, 11:04:10 AM
Man and Machine become one.  Still think the Singularity is crazy scifi nonsense?

Quote
ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2007) — Neuroscientists have significantly advanced brain-machine interface (BMI) technology to the point where severely handicapped people who cannot contract even one leg or arm muscle now can independently compose and send e-mails and operate a TV in their homes. They are using only their thoughts to execute these actions.

The best part of this is that the early uses will enable millions of disabled people to reconnect with the world, their loved ones, and even themselves.  Of course, soon other nefarious uses will come into play.  I for one am a bit leary about hooking my brain directly to a computer that is on the Internet.  Biofeedback loops, internet viruses, and synaptic overload come to mind right away.  Of course as with most technology, there will be mistakes and a learning curve that ultimately will give way to a whole new concept of what it is to be 'human'.  Having ones brain hooked up to a computer that can send and receive emails also allows for really annoying spamming opportunities.   I cannot wait for those Viagra emails.  Shocked

The first near emergent Artificially Intelligent Being? - by Mark | November 10, 2007, 09:42:15 PM
I have really been slacking on blogging about the Singularity....now all of sudden I seem to be finding articles everywhere with more evidence of its arrival.  We are entering a brave new world.  I cannot wait for the arrival of 'Technical Jesus'.

Quote
Storm size and capabilities may, or may not, be exaggerated. Some observers have estimated that Storm may have as much as a petabyte of memory at its disposal. The human brain may have as much as a petabyte of storage available to it.

For those paying attention.....a computer virus program now commands nearly as much if not more memory than a single human brain.  And keep in mind computers are doubling in power at about an 18 month interval give or take.  You think your puny carbon based Grey matter underneath your skull can keep up?  I doubt it....in a few years you will be lining up with everyone else for silican implants...it is inevitable.  Evolution marches onward...where will we all end up?  Only one logical place....Can you guess where?  I know where....it is called Heaven my friends....we will either get their alive or we will kill ourselves trying.  Immersive VR anyone?  Hell of a lot better than getting blown up by some religious whack job...ehh?

Unbelievable EVIL - by Mark | November 09, 2007, 06:43:24 PM
The perpetrators of this mass slaughter are pure evil.   Meanwhile "liberals" are worried about what terrible thing President George Bush did this week.

59 Schoolchildren Killed in Afghan Blast

Quote
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Dozens of schoolchildren and five teachers were among those killed in a suicide attack in northern Afghanistan earlier this week — the country's deadliest since the fall of the Taliban — the government said Friday.

The 59 schoolchildren had lined up to greet a group of lawmakers visiting a sugar factory in the northern province of Baghlan on Tuesday when a suicide bomber detonated explosives.

"Freedom fighters" (aka Taliban, Jihadists, and/or Al Qaeda) who slaughter innocent children.  Perhaps God (Allah) told them to do it?  The world has gone completely insane.

Halloween - by kim | October 31, 2007, 08:13:03 AM
Happy Halloween!!
Wyatt initially was not to into his spiderman halloween costume, but now we have a hard time getting it off of him.  He slept in it the other night, and last night, and probably will wear it till bed time tonight.  He has taken to sleeping with his spiderman figureine and even tried to put a diaper on it the other night.  The diaper was almost as big as the figureine.  I'll try to get some pictures of the boys up in their costumes tonight.  Jesse is a duck for halloween.  Hes a VERY cute duck..Wink  Jesse is now as of yesterday rolling over from back to front, but then after a bit gets pissed cause he does not know how to roll from front to back yet.  I am doing lots better, pretty much fully healed.  They are slowly taking me down off of the prednesone, thank god.  I have about another month of decreasing doses of it then i should be done.  Mark is working hard.  He has lots of irons in the fire at work.  I will be taking the kids down to Grandma's next week for a week so he can work some obscene amount of hours to get caught up before we head to Mom's for thanksgiving and the annual kill bambi fest (deer hunting).
Wyatt rather enjoy's trick or treating.  We took him to St. Pius' Trunk or Treat on Sat. and on Monday my mommies group went to 2 nursing homes.  The entire time I am thinking, "We always tell kids, dont take candy from strangers blah blah blah...but here i am saying, go on honey take one..." heh..ah well..
Welp the baby is waking up from his morning nap so I gotta go.
Edit:
Wyatt got to do a bit more trick or treating this evening.  He rather enjoyed handing out the candy to the other kids.  He was quite insistant that he get to do that when the kiddies came knocking on our door.  I have uploaded some pics to the albums.

Me - by kim | September 16, 2007, 12:13:10 PM
Well I am feeling better as the days progress.  The little drug cocktail they have me on in the mornings tends to kick my butt, but after a couple hours I am up and going.  Mom was here all week helping with the kids and stuff while I was recovering and resting.  We'll be using a babysitter next week till I am up and running and able to manage our lil boys.  Hopefully after next week I'll be running at normal capacity.  I still get tired if I do too much, so I have to take it easy.  At times I feel totally fine, then get kicked on my butt and tired from doing too much.  The diagnosis btw was um we really don't know exactly what was wrong with you.  It was either some form of colitis, chrone's disease or irritable bowel disease.  Apparently if/when it happens again they will build a medical file on me to figure out what my problem is.  yippee.
ALSO:
I just put a few newer pics of the kids up on the website.  We really need to find the battery charger for our camera.

Kim is coming home! - by Mark | September 07, 2007, 01:41:27 PM
Kim is going to be discharged this afternoon!  Hooray!!!

She will be on some pretty heavy meds for an indeterminate amount of time...but she is coming home.  Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes.  Our family really appreciated it.

UPDATE:  Kim is home and sleeping in our bed.  She has a huge quantity of drugs sitting on our dresser.  Hopefully she will recover quickly.  She will likely have many follow ups as the next few weeks go by....I will be sure to keep everyone updated.

This is sad....and very dangerous - by Mark | September 06, 2007, 01:57:41 PM
This poll shows that 42% of Democrats think Bush either caused 9/11 or let it happen.  This would be funny if it weren't so dangerous.  When nearly 1/2 of a political party believes the 'other' major political party leaders are actively engaged in plots to kill thousands of their own countryman...one weeps for the future of one's country.

UPDATE:  And on the heels of the poll above....Osama 'crazy beard man' Bin Laden proclaims:
Quote
“People of America: the world is following your news in regards to your invasion of Iraq, for people have recently come to know that, after several years of tragedies of this war, the vast majority of you want it stopped. Thus, you elected the Democratic Party for this purpose, but the Democrats haven’t made a move worth mentioning. On the contrary, they continue to agree to the spending of tens of billions to continue the killing and war there.”

At least my wife is getting healthier while the rest of the world goes completely insane.  Somehow....I bet the Democrats will use his new video as a way to bash Bush...instead of realizing America's biggest enemy believes they are a tool in his arsenal for defeating the country they claim to protect.

Hello! - by kim | September 05, 2007, 08:18:39 PM
Hello people!

So here I am with my hospital laptop.  Apparently you have to get pretty sick to get a vacation from the kids. Wink

Most of the test results come back tomorrow, but I'll be in here till Friday.  Hopefully no longer then that, but I'll probably still be all sorts of tired.  Kinda like getting a c section all over again! Only no open woulds ... on the outside anyway.  Thankfully my grandparents are up this week, but they have to leave on Friday.  Mom is going to be coming down Friday and staying till Monday unless she can get some kind of medical leave act paperwork through for her to be able to use her sick leave.

I am a human freaking pin cushion here.  I finally got to take a shower, wash my hair, and got out all squeekie clean only to find out that my IV got messed up and they had to pull it out.  Then the chick reinserting stuck me 5 times, before she finally got it in working on the 6th attempt. I was damn near in tears.  I have track lines from the blood work.  Totally a mess.  But they seem to think I am getting better.  I do feel better then when Mark brought me in on Monday.

I should be getting most of the test results back tomorrow.  This should dictate how much longer I will be in here and how longish my recovery will be.

Mark has been great through this all, and I am thankful that our family is here to help in our time of need.

Some good news about Kim - by Mark | September 04, 2007, 07:33:43 AM
The nurse called just a bit ago and finally we got some good news.  The doctor evaluated Kim this morning and her temperature was normal finally.  The doctor also told Kim, that she would probably be released from the ICU after her colonoscopy, assuming her temperature stays down and she continues to respond well to treatment.

UPDATE:  Well....Kim is slowly getting better.  She had her colonoscopy, and apparently she either has Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or irritable bowl syndrome.  Kim is still in the ICU, but she is getting better.  The doctors do not think she is infected....which is very good news, but we will not know for sure for a few days.  Her insides are pretty messed up though and it will take her awhile to heal completely...she will be in the hospital at least for the next few days.  The doctor said she should be moved out of ICU by tomorrow morning.  Thanks for all the kind words and prayers.
