Wyatt's 9 month checkup - by kim | March 30, 2006, 04:48:00 PM
Wyatt had his 9 month check up today.? Everything is fine with him.? He is 27.5 inches tall, which is in the 25th percentile, 18lbs and 12.5 oz, which is in the 25th percentile, and had a head circumfrence of 46 cm, which is in the 75th percentile.? So hes short and skinny with a big head. boardmod_main
He also got his finger pricked for anemia testing.? His score was 12.5, and the doctor likes for it to be over 11.? We also went to Mommy and Me this afternoon.? He got to play with other kids his age and crawl around just being social.? Hes 'talking' alot and getting into EVERYTHING.? He pulls up onto furniture and cruises, crawls when he can't do that, claps, gives kiss's, and can stand by himself for a few sec's at a time.? He will be walking before too much longer.? Mark is busy with school and work.? He will be glad when the semester is over.
Our friends Cheryl, Gomer and their 6 mo old son Conner came up to visit this last weekend.? It was quite fun.
All is well in the Zerr household.

Update on Wyatt - by Mark | February 03, 2006, 09:44:06 AM
Yesterday Kim and Wyatt went to their weekly "Mommy and Me" class. ?Wyatt now weighs 17 lbs 3 ozs, which should put him back up near the 50 percentile level he was at a few months ago. ?It is sort of frustrating that he will only really eat oatmeal, rice cereal, bananas, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes. ?Every time we try to feed him green veggies or some of the more "complex" baby foods we end up having to hide it inside a spoonful of bananas.

He is getting to be a pretty good crawler now. ?The last couple of days we think he has had a little cold, because his nose is stuffy and running and he has had trouble breathing at night. ?I think he is going to be all better in a day or two though. ? He seemed to sleep much better last night.

All is well here with us...I need to study this weekend for a test next week for my "Real Time Systems" course I stupidly decided to take this semester. ?I also need to start writing my term paper that is due in 3 weeks as well. ?So after working all day, than helping with the baby after work, and then finding time to study for my class, I am rewarded with sleep. ?Why oh why did I decide to go back to grad school again?

Wyatt is 7 months old! - by Mark | January 19, 2006, 05:03:20 PM
Wyatt is now 7 months old.  Amazing how fast time is moving lately.  Kim went to her weekly Mommy and Me meeting and Wyatt somehow dropped weight from 16 lbs 11 ozs....to 16 lbs 4 ozs.  I am starting to think their scales are messed up.  We thought we had got him back up to the 50% by his 7 month mark, but we lost ground from last week.  FYI...the 50% for weight of a 7 month old boy is about 17 lbs.

Anyways, baby is doing well.  He is SO very close to crawling.  Actually he crawls about 3-4 steps than rolls over on his back.  We think he is being lazy.  We lowered the crib mattress because he is also becoming very good at pulling himself up into the sitting and standing position.

More teeth! - by Mark | January 13, 2006, 11:34:29 AM
Wyatt now has 2 teeth, and another couple are on their way.  Hopefully, he will get a break soon from the teething and cheer up a bit.  Wyatt also gained 12 ounces in one week, thanks largely to Kim shoveling juice flavored oatmeal into him every morning.  We were getting concerned because he had not gained any weight for a few weeks, probably because he has become so mobile lately.  Anyways...it is looking like he will be back up to the 50th percentile at the next doctor visit, assuming he continues to gain weight.  I will try to get some pictures put up on the website later this weekend, as many people have pointed out I have been slacking in this area lately.  Also...you can tell from the age ticker at the top of the page that Wyatt is getting very close to being 7 months old.  Amazing how fast time goes when you are a parent. The Teeth are coming! - by Mark | January 11, 2006, 09:07:11 AM
It has been awhile since I posted about Wyatt's progression.

Wyatt first tooth finally broke through his gums a couple of days ago.  His first tooth to come in was his top left front tooth and his right front tooth will be breaking through any day now.  He has been more grumpy lately because of the teething I think.  We also had to upgrade his car seat to bigger model, since his infant seat was too small.  Wyatt now weighs approximately 16 pounds.  He has not gained a lot of weight the last few weeks.

We think this is primarily because he has been making amazing progress in his gross motor skills.  Wyatt can now "for the most part" sit unsupported and play with all his toys.  Occasionally he loses his balance and rolls over.  He is very close to being able to pull himself up into the sitting position.  For the last 3 weeks he has been trying to learn how to crawl.  He has the motion down, but is not quite strong enough and coordinated enough to pull it off.  He can move in circles, roll around on the floor from his front to back and back to front, and scoot backwards when in the crawling position.  But so far he has not managed to make much forward crawling practice.  We recently secured our house in anticipation of his crawling, which is kind of pain having little locks on all the cabinets and plug covers, but I suppose we will get used to the inconvenience soon enough.  He also moved upstairs into the bathtub for his baths now.  This is because he loves to splash the water, and he was really too big for the sink baths to be manageable anymore.

Wyatt has become an excellent grunter and screecher and he seems to be learning new sounds everyday.  He still does not really "babble" yet, but I suspect that is just around the corner.

Wyatt had his first Halloween yesterday and he dressed up like a little skeleton.  Also, Kim took him to Mommy and Me and he now weighs 14 lbs. 9.5 ozs.  So he is almost double his birth weight now.

The Egg Babies - by Mark | October 28, 2005, 07:44:10 AM
Ran across this today.

$200 to $2000 will buy you one of these breathtaking ?Egg Babies? sculptures from Camille Allen. She makes them out of Polymer Clay, which is cured to a hard, porcelain-like finish. And it even seems that at one time, you might have been able to ask Camille to make you a sculpture that resembled your baby photo. She is no longer accepting such requests.

Very cool.  You can go here to see more and read about the artist.

Wyatt Survived! - by Mark | October 19, 2005, 07:46:39 AM
Wyatt made it through his 4 month doctor's appointment yesterday.  He weighed 14 lbs. 1.5 ozs. and that puts him about the 40th percentile for weight.  He measured 24.5" long which put him in the 50th percentile for length.  The doctor said he was growing very well and told us it was OK to start introducing food.  Last night Wyatt had his first rice cereal meal and seemed to enjoy it.  The doctor also said he has excellent head control for his age.  Throughout the entire visit Wyatt was smiling at the nurse and doctor, giggling, and generally very happy.

Then the mean old nurse came in with four needles and Wyatt did not approve one bit.  But by the time Kim got him home he was asleep and it is all a distant memory I am sure.  Wyatt's next doctor appointment is at 6 months of age.

Baby Update - by Mark | October 18, 2005, 09:20:28 AM
Wyatt is going in for his 4 month doctor visit this afternoon.  Hard to believe he is 4 months old already.  He will be getting his second round of shots and hopefully the doctor will give the OK for us to start feeding him cereal.

Kim is concerned about his weight.  Most of the other babies in the Mommy and Me classes weigh considerably more than Wyatt.  However, a lot of those babies are formula fed and that generally leads to heavier babies.  Yesterday Wyatt was 13 lbs. 11 ozs. which was actually a 1 oz. drop from last week.  He is still about in the middle percentile for weight gain, but we have noticed he seems to waking up more in the night because he is hungry.  We suspect that once we start feeding him cereal he will start gaining more weight again.

As far as development goes, Wyatt is moving objects between his hands somewhat clumsily, he is becoming very squirmy and is starting to attempt to crawl.  He does not actually go anywhere, but I noticed last night that when he is on his belly he arches his back, lifts his head, and kicks his feet like crazy.  Looks sort of like a cartoon character spinning his feet before he starts running.  He is making more and more different sounds and becoming very interested in what Kim and I are eating, which is another sign he is ready to start eating cereal.  He has even started making very small stepping motions when you stand him up.  Also, the funniest thing so far is how he looks "embarrassed" when you look at him and babble at him.  He only does this when he is in a good mood.

Ozzie is starting to get very interested in Wyatt, it is constant battle to keep Ozzie from licking all over Wyatt's hands and face.

Well that is all for now.

Baby Dorrell Pictures - by Mark | October 04, 2005, 02:05:04 PM
Got an updated email from Gomer and Cheryl about their new baby, and finally we have pictures as well.

Well we made it home.  The birthing did not go as we had expected it but in the end we had a healthy baby boy, which is all we were hoping for.
Here is a rundown on how Connor was born.  Cheryl and I went to her regular doctors visit on Tuesday, Cheryl told her doctor that the baby was not moving as much as he had been.  The doctor was concerned about this and recommended that Cheryl be admitted to the hospital to induce her labor.  They started the inducement Tuesday evening.  On Wednesday the doctor was concerned that the baby's heart rate was not fluctuating as it should be.  He had a strong heart rate but it was like he was asleep all the time.  Her doctor suspected that the placenta was not supplying enough oxygen to the baby.  They were still trying to deliver the baby normally.  There was never any emergency during all this they just wanted to go ahead and get the baby delivered.  At about 5:00 Wednesday the doctor came in and told us that the baby's heart rate was decreasing during her contractions, and she wanted to go ahead with a C-section.  They gave Cheryl an epidural so she was awake during the surgery, and I was able to be with her in the OR.  At 5:34 the surgery began and at 5:37 the baby was born.  I've never been so happy to hear a baby cry in my life.  It turned out that Connor had tied his umbilical cord into a knot, as well as managing to get it wrapped around his neck.  Our doctor told me that knots only happen in about 1 percent of births, and that we were  fortunate that we made it to the hospital when we did.  We were released from the hospital on Friday night.  Cheryl is not going to be running any marathons any time soon but considering the surgery she went through she is doing wonderful.
Connor is great.  He is a very active little guy.  Mostly just eating, sleeping and pooping with some occasional crying thrown in to mix it up a bit.  It's all a little overwhelming still.  No final exam or continuing education units required.  Just take your kid and try not to screw him up.  I did get my baptism into fatherhood today.  Cheryl and I were giving Connor  his first bath and the little guy peed all over me.  You would think that babies would have small bladders but this kid went on for a long time and got some real distance too.  No projectile pooping yet like Zerr warned me about, but I'm sure it is just a matter of time.
